Focus on garden calendar

May 9th, 2012

There is just a month to go for keen photographers to enter the annual Webbs calendar competition in aid of local hospices.

Webbs Garden Centres in Wychbold, near Droitwich and West Hagley are running the photo competition for the eighth year running after it proved to be so popular with customers.

More than 1,500 images were entered from 330 photographers into last year’s competition, which judges then had to whittle down to the final 12, depicting each month of the year.

Webbs is planning to produce a calendar for 2013 from original photographs in aid of the firm’s chosen charities, St Richard’s, Primrose, Kemp, Mary Stevens and Acorns Hospices in Worcestershire. Webbs’ judges are again searching for wonderful photographs of flowers, gardens, garden scenes, flora & fauna.

The competition is open to everyone, amateur or enthusiast of any age. Entry forms are available in-store at Wychbold and West Hagley or to download from here

Judging will take place in the middle of June 2012 and the 12 winning entries will be featured in the calendar, with each winning photographer credited. The calendar will go on sale in the autumn.

Executive Chairman Ed Webb said: “we’ve already had some stunning photos sent in for the competition but we still have a few weeks to go so would love to see more. The bigger the choice we have, the better the end calendar will be. It may be a photo taken in your own garden or from when you were out walking or visiting somewhere special. ”

He added: “The calendar is always very popular and we give each of the hospices hundreds of copies for them to use for fundraising. We are hoping to repeat the previous years’ successes and create a beautiful calendar which will also benefit our local hospices. ”

The 12 winning entrants will each receive Webbs Gift Vouchers worth £30 and 12 copies of the calendar to give to friends and family.

Wildlife experts spread the word

May 9th, 2012

Wildlife experts will be encouraging gardeners to look after the creatures on their doorsteps during a special weekend at Webbs in Wychbold.

Rose, 6, Jack, 8, and Erin Baker, 2, look forward to learning about garden wildlife

The award-winning garden centre near Droitwich will be hosting experts from The Wildlife Trusts, RSPB and Wildlife World on Saturday and Sunday 19th and 20th May from 11am – 4pm. They will be on hand to answer visitors’ wildlife queries.

There’s also a chance to inspire youngsters to look after the birdlife in their gardens when they can decorate a wooden nest box and take it home.

The decorating workshops will run from 11am to 4pm each day and tickets, costing £4.99, will be available on the day.

There is also a chance for families to follow a fun Wildlife Ramble around the beautiful Riverside Gardens at Webbs. Entry to the gardens is free and all trail entries will go into a draw to win a prize. The trail is open from 11am to 4pm.

Webbs Chairman, Ed Webb, said “With the help of our visiting experts, we hope to encourage everyone to do their bit for wildlife. Whether you have a window box or a large garden, it doesn’t take a lot to make space for wildlife.“

He added, “The nest box decorating for children proved a big hit when we introduced the workshops earlier this year. The natural nest sites on which many of our bird species depend, such as holes in trees and buildings, are fast disappearing as gardens and woods are ‘tidied’ and old houses are repaired. This is just one small way of helping to ensure we are doing all we can to help our bird population.”

Webbs ‘Five Hospices Challenge’ proudly blooms

Webbs workers get to grips with the garden makeover

Webbs workers get to grips with the garden makeover

Teams from Webbs Garden Centres in Wychbold and West Hagley successfully took on a Five Hospices Challenge in Worcestershire yesterday (Tuesday, 13th March), to brighten up their outdoor spaces for patients and families to enjoy.

The Webbs workers took on the planting makeovers as part of the first national Garden Re-leaf Day. They took time out to work at the firm’s chosen charities St Richard’s, Acorns, Primrose, Kemp and Mary Stevens Hospices.

They created a new garden vista for a bedroom at St Richard’s Hospice in Worcester with the help of Bransford Webbs Plant Company; created herbaceous borders at Primrose Hospice in Bromsgrove; provided hanging baskets for the sensory garden and entrances at Mary Stevens Hospice in Stourbridge; brightened up Kemp Hospice in Kidderminster with planters and a raised vegetable plot for patients; and developed a herb garden as a project for the patients at Acorns Hospice in Worcester.

As well as the hands-on projects, staff and customers have raised £1,500 so far in Garden Re-leaf initiatives for Greenfingers, the garden industry charity that creates magical gardens for children’s hospices.

Ed Webb, Scott Butterworth, Amy Whitelock (Acorns community fundraiser) and Ewin Thomas-Brinkley (Acorns Client)

Chairman of Webbs, Ed Webb said, “It’s been a great day with Webbs staff working to brighten up the hospices so patients, families, staff and volunteers can relax in and enjoy these lovely outdoor spaces. We worked with the hospices to find out exactly what they felt was the best way to achieve that and are very happy with the end results.”

He added, “Some of the hospices were keen to encourage patients to get involved too in the gardens so we have made areas more easily accessible for them to grow plants and vegetables. I’m very proud of the Webbs teams from Wychbold and West Hagley who worked extremely hard to make these Garden Re-leaf projects so successful. We support our local hospices in many varied ways, but this was a great project to use our expertise for their benefit.”

St Richard’s Fundraising Director Tricia Cavell said, “our patients and families are thrilled with the new garden area that the Bransford Webbs and Webbs teams created. It’s so lovely to have such an uplifting scene and a pleasure to have welcomed the staff here to the hospice. We are really grateful for all the planning, hard work and enthusiasm they put into it as well as the beautiful plants.”

Ele Millward, fundraiser at Kemp Hospice said, “The transformation of the front of the building is absolutely fantastic and we are all thrilled, already patients have been commenting about how welcoming it feels. Webbs went above and beyond, bringing additional features and even re-planted a border for us by the new raised bed in the garden, which looks great. The team from Webbs were so enthusiastic and we are very grateful to them for all the time and effort and the wonderful gift of plants. A big thank you from everyone at KEMP Hospice.”

Tony Williams from Acorns said, “we are so pleased with the kitchen herb garden that Webbs staff have so brilliantly created, and send our thanks to all that were involved in it. The timing of the completion of this garden couldn’t be better as it is seven years since the Worcester Hospice opened on the 14th of March 2005 which Webbs were involved in at the time.”

Chairman of Webbs, Ed Webb said, “This is a fantastic opportunity to help our local hospices and bring the community together through gardening. We asked each hospice how we could help and are delighted to rise to the challenge. “
